Pilates is an excercise system that is suitable for all people-regardless of age and level of fitness. It improves posture, strenghtnes the cores muscles and helps increase stamina, flexibility and poise.

Helth problems caused by a   sedentary lifestyle

Some of the more common and most obvious problems that our lyfestyle brings and that could be reduced with pilates are:

- Adult-onset diabetes: a disease largely associated with obesity and hence with poor diet and luck of exercise.

- Back pain: this clearly has many causes, but is worse in those who are overweight and those taking little or no cardio exercise.

- Brain function: a large number of studies have shown that the supposed loss of brain function as we age can be prevented and in some cases reversed by the use of cardio exercise.

- Strokes: many studies show results similsr to those suggested for brain function above.

- Heart disease: cardiovascular exercise and a healthy diet are critical in reducing the risk of heart disease.

- Osteroporosis: whilst this disease in largely a result of hormonal and genetic influences, there is growing evidence that the increase of the disease among men results fromthe reduction in the amount of load-bearing exercise. A resistance-exercise programme may alleviate some of the problems.

- Chronic pain: (knees, shoulders and neck are the most common areas after the back). Aches and pains in theese areas may be a sign of osteoartritis. Evidence now suggests that movement and gently exercise can help delay the onset of the symptoms, and continued exercise once the symptoms appear can help reduce pain.

- Various cancers: we are becoming increasingly aware of the influence of environmental effects that can precipitate cancer in those who may be genetically prone to the specific types. Amongst the environmental influences, diet and exercise habits loom large.
